Flute Duets

Playing the flute can be a little tricky at the beginning when you’re just learning how to make a proper sound. Once you get comfortable making a good sound and get a handful of fingerings and rhythms under your belt, being able to play with other flute players or other instruments can be very rewarding.

To give yourself an extra challenge, instead of everyone playing the same notes, you can play duets using simple melodies. A duet usually consists of two players or can be used to describe two groups of players. One group plays the melody and the other group plays the harmony.

Below I’ve included a couple simple tunes (Ode to Joy and Skip to My Lou) with both a melody part and a harmony part. You can learn both parts, then play them with a friend and each of you takes turns playing the two parts.

*These duets are found in The Beginning Band Fun Book’s Funsembles: Book of Easy Duets by Larry Newman. You can find more of their books at http://www.bandfunbook.com.
