Adult’s First Piano Lesson

If you’re an adult and it’s your first piano lesson, you may not have any books or materials yet. So, what do you learn in your first lesson? What do you practice after your first lesson?

I use a couple different books for adults (either Bastien Adult or Alfred’s Adult) and will bring them into the first lesson for us to look at and maybe try a few things out to see which one will be the best book for the student. But if we are doing an online or virtual lesson, that’s a little harder to do.

So, I decided to create something the student could practice for the first couple lessons until they get their new books. In the first couple lessons, we go over Right Hand (RH) vs Left hand (LH), finger numbers, some basic rhythms, the letters on the piano, and our first hand position: C Position.

The PDF below shows where C position is on the keyboard with the letters included and the finger numbers underneath, RH is red and LH is blue. Then follows a series of exercises using basic rhythms that we went over in your first lesson. Each rhythm has letters underneath from our C position and I’ve included the fingers numbers for each hand, again with RH being red and LH being blue. You should start by playing these exercises one hand at a time. But as you become comfortable, you may try them with both hands at the same time.
