It’s Beginning to Look A lot Like Christmas!

Yuletide times are here!

December can be a juggling act, balancing the season with family priorities and joyful learning in the classroom. The month of December is magical in the music classroom, filled with the excitement of concerts, recitals, and seasonal music games. It’s a time when students shine on stage, share their talents, and experience the joy of making music together. But amidst the hustle and bustle, it’s essential to prioritize balance—both in the classroom and at home—to truly savor the season.

Preparing for Christmas concerts & Recitals

Music educators know December is prime time for performances. From festive choir concerts to piano recitals, these events bring the community together to celebrate the season. Organizing ahead is key: create detailed rehearsal schedules, streamline transitions, and encourage students to practice regularly at home. Incorporate fun warm-up games like Truth of Dare Christmas, Pass the Present, Christmas Carol Name That Tune or Note Name Bingo to keep rehearsals engaging and productive (All of these games are great for upper elementary, middle school, or even high school music classes and choir rehearsals).

This covers a variety of music theory symbols and terms, and encourages students to sing Christmas carols and perform on instruments!
This is a great game to break the tension in the choir rehearsals and rehearse some well-known Christmas carols!

Seasonal Music Games for December Fun

Incorporate holiday-themed games that reinforce musical concepts while keeping students in the festive spirit. Favorites like Frosty’s Piano Path for note reading (including sharps and flats on piano keys and on staff), Gingerbread Solfege Matching for solfege centers, Christmas Recorder Fun for recorder skills, and Christmas Roll & Cover for small groups and music theory practice are perfect for reinforcing skills while adding a seasonal twist. These activities not only support learning but also bring joy to the classroom as students celebrate the season through play.

Prioritizing Time with Family

As educators, it’s easy to get swept up in the busyness of the season. Encourage students—and yourself!—to make time for family traditions, whether it’s baking cookies, singing carols, or simply enjoying quiet evenings together. Emphasize to students that music can be a part of their family celebrations. Suggest simple at-home activities, like singing favorite holiday songs together or creating a family recital. Above all, remember to HAVE FUN in the music classroom, at concert rehearsals, and at home!

No note reading required for this one! Just simple recorder note practice!

Embracing the Spirit of the Season

The music classroom is a place where the joy and wonder of December can flourish. By balancing preparation for performances, integrating seasonal games, and encouraging connection outside the classroom, we can make this time of year both meaningful and memorable.

Take a moment to breathe in the season’s magic—both in your classroom and your home. December is a time to share the gift of music and to appreciate the moments that truly matter.
