If it’s your child’s first piano lesson, they may not have any books yet. So, what do we do in our first lesson without books or material to look at?
Most beginner children’s books begin by teaching about the Right Hand vs. the Left Hand and learning that each finger has a number. Then they learn about the black keys on the piano. The black keys come in groups of 2’s and 3’s all the way up and down the keyboard. So, we begin by teaching various patterns using the black keys and playing them in groups or 2 or 3, with the black keys being played together with one hand.
For example, the child may use their Right Hand to find and play all the groups of 2 black keys. By using their index finger and middle finger (or fingers 2 and 3), they can play both keys in the group at the same time. Then they may do the same thing with their Left Hand. Then they can follow the same pattern for the group of 3 black keys, using the index finger, middle finger, and ring finger (or fingers 2, 3, and 4). After that they can play different patterns using the groups of black keys and alternating between the hands. Or maybe they can even create their own patterns!
Here you will find a sheet with some patterns I have created to use in a first piano lesson for kids.
